As part of its successful collaboration with Microsoft, the IT consultancy firm Easi continues to innovate. With the rise of AI in the sector, the company sees an opportunity to optimize the work of its legal department. That’s why a powerful AI solution, based on Copilot, was implemented internally to support legal professionals in time-consuming tasks. The result? A clear improvement in efficiency and accuracy for our legal teams. We are therefore pleased to share our findings with you.
Why integrate AI into legal departments?
The legal world is becoming increasingly complex due to the continuous evolution of Belgian and European legislation, pushing organizations to invest more and more resources into contract validation and legal compliance. To meet this growing challenge, Easi recently began using Microsoft Copilot within its legal department. « Cases like this perfectly illustrate why AI solutions like Copilot were developed: to relieve repetitive, time-consuming tasks while significantly boosting team productivity and efficiency », says Clémence Desmarez, Microsoft consultant at Easi.
This also clearly translates into measurable benefits: « The return on investment is significant, with an estimated time saving of two hours per contract and an annual saving of € 33,000», adds Clémence. In the Legal department, Copilot can analyze legal documents, detect risks, suggest improvements, and assist in contract negotiations – always leaving final responsibility with the legal professionals. This allows lawyers to focus on higher strategic value tasks, such as negotiations and decision-making.
Can Microsoft Copilot support legal validation processes without compromising accuracy or compliance?
The Easi legal team used to spend between 4 and 5 hours per contract on manual validation – a time-consuming and unmotivating process. AI seemed like the ideal solution to improve this workflow. The key question was whether Copilot could help validate complex and important contracts while ensuring accuracy and compliance.
Its integration was therefore approached in several phases:
-
Identifying needs: The legal team identified the most time-consuming tasks and analyzed the current validation process. It quickly became clear that certain checks, often repetitive in nature, took up a lot of time without providing real added value.
-
Creating a framework: To test the solution, our legal team worked with our Microsoft engineers. Together, they developed an Excel checklist containing the essential contract validation criteria. These criteria were then entered into Copilot to detect clauses deemed unacceptable. Finally, a parallel validation was set up where Copilot's results were compared to manual legal assessments.
-
Refining accuracy: Unlike traditional AI models, Microsoft Copilot does not train itself on new data but instead adapts based on business rules stored in the organization’s Microsoft tenant. This offers major advantages for legal applications: Copilot does not store sensitive data and operates based on predefined criteria from internal documentation, leading to consistent and reliable outcomes.
As a 360° IT partner specializing in cybersecurity, compliance and data protection are top priorities for Easi. Microsoft Copilot fits perfectly within this philosophy, as it offers two guarantees:
-
Data always remains within the secure Microsoft environment.
-
Legal teams retain full control over their data, within a strict framework compliant with internal security standards and external privacy regulations.
« It is also important to note that no technical expertise is required on the client side. Easi handles the entire implementation, allowing companies to transition more comfortably », adds Sophie-Anne, Legal Supervisor at Easi.
What is the future of AI in legal departments?
FULLY AUTOMATED LEGAL AI
In the long term, Easi aims to evolve toward a fully automated contract validation process with minimal human intervention. « Imagine automatic scanning of incoming contracts via email, followed by a structured summary including approved clauses, possible objections and ambiguities. Copilot could then automatically generate a response file with clear action points, resulting in massive time savings in contract validation », explains Clémence Desmarez, Microsoft consultant at Easi.
CHALLENGES AND KEY INSIGHTS
The powerful support of Copilot comes with a few important conditions:
-
Copilot works within Microsoft’s pricing model, meaning overly long or complex requests can reduce efficiency;
-
Copilot does not learn autonomously like traditional AI models – providing clear and structured instructions is essential;
-
Confidential contractual information must strictly remain within the secure Microsoft environment and must never be used to train external AI models.
In summary, the value of AI within the Legal department
There’s no doubt that AI can elevate legal departments to the next level. With Microsoft Copilot, legal professionals save valuable time, sharpen their focus on strategic work, and retain full control over their data. The result? Smarter processes, faster decisions, and legal quality that goes hand-in-hand with technological innovation.
